Carleton eliminated in close playoff

MONTREAL (Oct.15.2016) –

A gut wrenching loss in the bottom of the 7th inning of Game 2 of the Northern Division playoff ended Carleton’s hopes of returning to the National Championship.

A pitching duel between Carleton starter Mike Bannon (2-2, 2.74 ERA) and Concordia starter Dan Connerty held the game scoreless into the seventh until a wild pitch by Ryan Burnside in relief allowed Paquette-Groulx to score from third to end Carleton’s hopes.

Game 1 was also a close affair. It was Burnside (.224, 5 RBIs) who knocked home Nodwell (.395, 11RBIs) from third that cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning. But it wasn’t enough as effective pitching performances by Lajeunesse (2-2, 3.04 ERA) and McGinnis (2-1, 5.60 ERA), who combined to allow only 2 runs, couldn’t overcome stellar pitching by Concordia’s Beliesle-Springer and Zapata for the win.

With Carleton’s loss and the Université of Montréal Stingers owning a bye to the final as host, the Northern Division will be represented by the Stingers, McGill University and Concordia University while the Atlantic will be represented by Acadia University, St.Mary’s University, and the University of New Brunswick.
